Dog-Friendly Guide to All Things Mammoth

With its serene outdoor activities, Mammoth will surely be any dog’s vacation haven. This is why we think bringing your best friend along for your next mountain adventure should be a question of when – not if or how.

To answer any questions or concerns you might have when bringing your furry friend along, check out our guide below. As with anywhere you go, please follow proper etiquette, such as cleaning up after your pet, giving space before greeting others, and always using a leash in public areas.

Things to do

Regardless of season—whether you're visiting during the summer or winter—there are numerous activities designed to keep your dog engaged and content.

  • Hiking trails are EVERYWHERE in Mammoth. Some of our favorites to enjoy with furry friends start at the Lakes Basin.
  • Swimming at Reds Lake or Lake Mary is a great option if you want to find water without a long hike. If you’re up for a little drive, check out June Lake, Convict Lake, or Crowley Lake.
  • Paddleboarding pups are not just the thing of Instagram dreams up here. Glide along the water with your best bud at your feet for magical moments you’ll treasure forever.
  • Snowshoe or Cross-Country Ski with your fellow snow-lover at many locations in or around town, including Shady Rest, Obsidian Dome, and Hot Creek. You can even take them out on the ungroomed areas around Tamarack Cross-Country Ski Center.
  • Dog Parks are a great way for you and Fido to get the lead out with some fetch, cross-country skiing, snowball catch, or however you like to get your tail-wags in. Shady Rest has been a favorite option for years, and now we can add Mammoth Lakes Dog Park (near Cerro Coso College) to the list.
