Follow these guidelines for a fun and safe mountain excursion

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Ask hotel staff about current conditions, and make sure you’ve picked an appropriate destination for everyone in your group. Consider elevation gain and mileage; a gain of more than 500 feet can be challenging. If you’re on a solo hiking or biking adventure, tell someone where you’re going.

BE PREPARED

A sunny Sierra morning can quickly turn into a stormy afternoon, so check the weather forecast and pack a rain jacket. Bring water, food, sunscreen and insect repellent, and bring your mobile phone. A basic first aid kit and headlamp or flashlight are essential for longer hikes.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Stay on hiking and biking trails. Pack out all your trash and food scraps, pick up your fishing line, and dispose of human and pet waste properly (carry it out, or bury it in a hole 6–8 inches deep and 200 feet away from water, trails and campsites).

TAKE ONLY PICTURES

Leave plants, rocks and historical items as you found them, so others can enjoy them too.

KEEP WILDLIFE WILD

Observe bears, deer and other wildlife from a distance. Do not feed wild animals.
