Explore the geologic, natural and cultural history of Mammoth on this self-guided adventure amid a backdrop of high alpine peaks and pristine lakes. It starts with a Scenic Gondola Ride to the summit, where you can check out the Eleven53 Interpretive Center’s interactive exhibits, then stop at several on-mountain learning stations to find out why this is one of the most studied regions in the world.

Summit Station
Interpretive Center
Featuring interactive exhibits for all ages, a knowledgeable docent, café and panoramic views of the Sierra and beyond. This is the central hub of the Explore Mammoth experience, at the very top of the mountain.
During the summer, keep an eye out for a U.S. Forest Service Naturalist who can share information on the region's geologic history, flora and fauna, and more.

Lakes Basin Overlook
Enjoy a commanding view of the region and learn about the early pioneers who mined its treasures. Learn about the Sierra Nevada mountain range, glaciation and the amazing middle fork of the San Joaquin River.
History Station
Mammoth Museum Outside McCoy Station
Journey back to the 1950s and discover how Dave McCoy’s vision and innovations transformed Mammoth Mountain and the ski industry. Early grooming, avalanche and lift equipment are on display.
Weather Station
Snow Study Site
Find out why Mammoth’s high alpine weather patterns are a boon to skiers and scientists alike. Discover the critical role Mammoth’s snow pack plays in the California water supply, and learn about ongoing scientific research and the sophisticated instruments stationed on the mountain.
Geology Station
Long Valley Overlook
Discover the prodigious volcanic history of Mammoth Mountain and its surrounding area. Learn about the Bishop Tuff “super explosion,” the Long Valley Caldera, Inyo-Mono craters and other geologic marvels.
Ecology Hike
Discovery Nature Trail
Learn about the resilient flora and fauna that call Mammoth home while hiking along this moderate 1 mile loop. Identify local critters, birds and trees, and discover how they’ve adapted to this high altitude environment.
