Altitude at Mammoth Mountain
The altitude at Mammoth Mountain ranges from 7,953 feet in town to 11,053 feet at the summit, meaning thinner air and stronger UV exposure. To help prevent altitude sickness, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before and during your trip. Pace yourself, especially if you're not used to high elevations, and always wear sunscreen and SPF lip balm to protect against intense UV rays. If you experience dizziness, nausea, or fatigue, take a break and, if needed, descend to a lower elevation to stay safe and comfortable.
Trail Maps
Plan your route with ease using the Mammoth App, where you can track your progress and access our interactive trail map. Prefer the classic version? Pick up a printed map at any ticket counter.
After arriving in Mammoth, leave your car parked and take advantage of the free Eastern Sierra Transit Authority (ESTA) buses, which connect the town and all mountain lodges. Free and paid parking options are available, with parking shuttles running at Main Lodge. Lots typically open at 6:00 AM.
Get SLOPE Ready
We know your first time on snow can feel a little overwhelming, but don’t worry – we’ve got your back. This section covers all the basics to help you feel confident and excited about your day. With everything you need in one place, your first day on snow will be nothing but smooth turns and fun memories.
Let's cover the basics:
Lift tickets & passes ❯ |
All guests need an Ikon Pass or lift ticket to access the slopes. Save the most by purchasing online in advance. Beginner lift tickets and afternoon tickets are available, and kids 4 and under or seniors 80+ ski free. Group lessons also allow you to add a lift ticket at checkout, making it easy to bundle everything for your first day. |
equipment rentals ❯ |
No gear? No problem. Mammoth Rentals has everything you need to hit the slopes, with convenient locations at each base lodge, the Mountain Center in The Village and at select hotels. Choose from standard packages for beginners or demo gear for those looking to try the latest technology. Packages include skis or snowboards, boots, and poles. |
What to Wear ❯ |
Stay warm and dry with waterproof snow pants, gloves or mittens, and a winter jacket. Goggles are a must to protect your eyes from cold air and UV rays. If you need extra layers or forgot an essential, stop by any on-mountain retail shop for last-minute gear. |
Start With a Snowboard or Ski Lesson
If this is truly your first time skiing or snowboarding we recommend starting with a First Timer Lesson. These small group lessons (max 6) are matched by ability to help you progress quickly.
Beginner Group Lessons and Private Lessons are also great options. Check out our What Level Am I chart for our full list of recommendations based on ability levels.
For more details on how to best prepare for your lesson, like when to arrive, check out our Ski & Snowboard School Preparation Guide.

Lessons for Kids

- Discounted rentals and lift tickets can be added at checkout.
- Group lessons for ages 3–4 and all afternoon first-timer lessons include a free lift ticket.
- Full-day lessons for ages 5–7 and 8–14 require a lift ticket and include lunch.
Child Care Options
For little ones not ready for the hill, Mammoth Child Care offers a safe, fun environment for kids as young as 3 months. The Lesson + Child Care Package pairs a morning ski lesson at Canyon Lodge with lunch, rest, and activities at our Child Care facility in The Village. Need a few extra hours of adult time? Go Cashless with Gift Cards
Here's a pro tip: Mammoth is a cashless resort, so gift cards are the perfect solution for your family.
